Under His wings I am safely abiding,
Tho’ the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me.
He has redeemed me, and I am His child.
Under His wings – what a refuge in sorrow! How the heart yearningly turns to His rest! Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed.
Under His wings, O what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are o`er, Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me, Resting in Jesus, I’m safe evermore.
Under His wings, under His wings
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.William Cushing, ca. 1896
Another hymn I’m not familiar with – but the story behind it is inspiring. I hope it blesses you as it did for me π Devotional from the book titled Hymns Volume 1, Daily Grace Co.
William Cushing was a successful pastor for 27 years in several large churches. After his young wife passed away, he endured a period of deep depression. He developed a debilitating condition that caused him the loss of his speech. He was forced to step down from the pulpit at the age of 47. In despair and loneliness, he asked the Lord to give him a way to glorify Him despite his limited abilities. The Lord answered this prayer with the gift of hymn writing. William wrote hymns, several of which are well-known today, including “When He Cometh (the Jewel Song) and “Hiding in Thee.”
This is a wonderful example of how the Lord can make beautiful things out of tragedy if we are willing to be used by Him in what may be unorthodox ways. We may not understand God’s plan or why He allows hard things in our lives, we can be sure that He will make beauty from the ashes. Cushing is thought to have written over 300 gospel hymns, and his influence as a hymn writer far exceeded his successful years as a pastor. We may not feel like we have much to give, but the Lord can multiply it for His kingdom. God can do big things with some loaves and a couple of fish if we offer Him what we have.
This hymn’s theme of a mother hen who tucks her chicks underneath her to keep them warm and safe is the same protection God offers us. Psalm 91:4 says, “He will cover you with his feathers; you will take refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield”. There is refuge in the arms of our Savior – refuge from the world, the enemy, and our own evil desires. Let us run to Him.Study by Cara Cobble Trantham, Daily Grace Co
Amen! I pray we find it in our hearts to run TO Jesus and not away from Him, for refuge under His wings.
Psalms 91:4 NIV
[4] He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings, you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
