The juxtaposition of poverty and wealth in Los Angeles, CA – USA, is jarring. During our short visit in November 2023, this stark contrast was an eye opener, I recall writing about it one day during our stay.
Homelessness is a crisis all over the world, including where I come from. But for me, in LA, it stood out like a sore thumb because just a short distance from the mansions of tinseltown and the rich and famous, many struggle to survive on the streets.

The fires in LA have laid bare the city’s deep-seated economic inequalities and somewhat temporarily brought everyone to the same level. As the fires rage on, with lives lost, thousands left homeless, and yet more preparing to evacuate or unsure of their safety, I can’t help but wonder how the beautiful city of LA will rise from this tragedy.

It’s disheartening to think that maybe only those with the financial means will be able to rebuild and prosper, while the poor and homeless continue to face the same challenges as before. Could this be an opportunity now for those in the right places to reimagine a more equitable LA?
Our faith in Christ compels us to act with compassion and empathy rather than standing in judgment or doing nothing. We should be praying earnestly, asking God to extend His mercy and grace to all those impacted by the fires, including the rich and the poor, believers, and non-believers.

I pray and hope that this crisis will prompt a collective effort to create a more just and equitable Los Angeles, and California as a whole, where everyone has access to safe, affordable housing, opportunities, and resources to thrive πβ€οΈ
Having said that, I’m well aware that without God’s guidance, our perceptions of right and wrong, shaped by our limited human experience, can be misleading. To gain a deeper understanding of global and local events, we must humble ourselves and seek God’s wisdom, which brings peace and clarity.

1 Corinthians 1:25 (NIV)
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
God have mercy on the first responders, firefighters, volunteers and people of LA. We lift up Los Angeles, Southern California, America, and all local & global communities impacted by both natural and man-made disasters, praying that God’s mercy and grace will descend upon them, bringing comfort, relief, hope, and restoration.

To God be the glory always πβ€οΈ
