The Rock – who comes to mind?π€ Dwayne Johnson, Maui from Moana, or maybe Rocky? Whatever your answer, got your attention, right?! π Now, let’s get to the point – don’t worry, this isn’t a movie review.

Reading Luke 20:17-18 recently got me thinking about the concept of a “rock” or “stone.””
Luke 20:17-18 NIV [17]
Jesus looked directly at them and asked, βThen what is the meaning of that which is written: βββThe stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstoneβ ? [18] Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.β
Please take a moment to read Luke chapter 20 to understand the context behind Jesus words in verses 17 – 18. These verses, especially 17 is rooted in Psalm 118:22:
Psalms 118:22 NIV
[22] The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;

As you read the chapter, you’ll note that the chief priests, teachers of the law, and elders were caught in a difficult situation, much like being between a rock and a hard place, as they questioned Jesus’ authority. Rather than directly confronting them, Jesus responded with questions of His own and parables, including the parable of the tenants, which clearly referred to Himself.
Case in point, the religious leaders in turn recognize themselves in the parable and realize Jesus is talking about them, but instead of repenting, they seek to harm Him.
As Christians, many times when caught in similar situations i.e. between a rock and hard place, we look to our own understanding, strength, etc, to defend ourselves or even justify our position. We forget about the bible and all its amazing teachings. We choose confrontation rather than understanding to teach.
Family and friends, our faith must be based on the cornerstone, Jesus. Knowing well and fully understanding that this faith journey isn’t without its obstacles. We have already faced or will continue to face trials and challenges that test our resolve every day. Jesus’ words should be a reminder for us not to prioritize things of this world over Him.
Jesus is the rock that can trip us up. If reading the word of God doesn’t challenge us π€ or if Jesus words don’t make us rethink our faith walk – I believe we are being complacent. We might start feeling like the religious leaders of the time, just ticking boxes, not realising we’re stopping others from knowing Jesus. When we stumble, our response should be to get back up, refocus on Jesus, and follow Him rather than going our own way or plotting against Him.

Ephesians 2:19-21 NIV
[19] Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with Godβs people and also members of his household, [20] built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. [21] In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
The stone that was rejected is now our cornerstone βοΈβ€οΈ
