What if?!

(Update: this is a blog from 2021, revised today May 31, 2026)

I wrote this back in 2015 to farewell a loved one. Looking back it seems August of every year, we receive news that someone we know or their loved one has passed on.

And this August is no different, as overnight we hear of the passing of an inlaw. Oh how I lament the loss of another family member, the sorrow and pain his loved ones are going through ☹💔

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

What if?

What if we spent more time caring for one another?

What if we spent more time sharing with one another?

What if we spent more time loving one another?

What if the loved ones who have passed on were here in our place instead?

What if the sun set at dawn and rose at dusk?

The point is this:

No amount of “what ifs” in this world—or the next—can make the sun set at dawn or rise at dusk.

No amount of wishing can bring back our loved ones.

All we have left are memories—countless memories to cherish.

Perhaps, too, we are left with a deeper sense of empathy:
* to care more,
* to share more, and
* to love one another more deeply, because tomorrow is never guaranteed.

And for those carrying grief and sorrow, may we find comfort in the promise of Scripture:

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18
